Due to its position at the equator, Kenya receives sunshine most times of the year with the daily insolation estimate between 4-6 kWh/m2. Turkana county receives up to 7 kWh/m2 of daily insolation and up to 2400 kwh/m2 of Direct Normal Radiation (see map of Kenya with direct normal radiation below) being among the highest in the country[1]. Some of the ongoing initiatives to tap into the resource include retrofitting of diesel gensets, installation of mini grids and water pumping systems. These are highlighted in sections 1.4 and 2.1 of this plan. Figure 4.4 shows the average annual sum of direct normal irradiation for Kenya and the Solar suitability site map for Turkana County.
